The film, which will be directed by Scott Derrickson, tells the story of Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, who is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.

The Black Phone marks Derrickson’s return into the horror genre, as he previously directed Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and Deliver Us From Evil before jumping into the superhero realm to direct Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange.

The film will also star four-time Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke, who also starred in Derrickson’s Sinister in 2012. The Black Phone will be produced, directed, and co-written by Derrickson, who co-wrote the film with C. Robert Cargill (Doctor Strange, Sinister franchise) and will be based on the award-winning short story by Joe Hill from his New York Times bestseller 20th Century Ghosts. Derrickson & Cargill’s Crooked Highway will be joined by Jason Blum, who is also joining as a producer.
