Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance Rerelease Xbox One PlayStation 4

2001 action RPG Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance will see a rerelease on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch on May 7. That is tomorrow as of the time of writing, so fans barely have to wait to relive the adventure. The Dungeons & Dragons-based game by Snowblind Studios was one of a number of titles under the Baldur’s Gate name, which originated in a BioWare RPG in 1998.

Dark Alliance originally released on consoles of its day (PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Gamecube) alongside a Game Boy Advance release that was tuned specifically for that portable platform. It was envisioned initially as a way to bring Baldur’s Gate to PlayStation 2 but quickly evolved into its own game. It even spawned its own direct sequel in 2004.

The game, which is a top-down loot-driven action game, will see a boost to 4K resolutions as part of this rerelease, but will otherwise not see significant graphical upgrades. The game will sell for $30 across all platforms and support newer consoles like the Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 via Backward Compatability.

This rerelease is likely in part to inspire a renewed interest in the series for the benefit of two other games that are still in development. Both Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate III and Tuque Games’ Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance are set to make their debut in the near future, and players going back to the original would have the interest to see what a new version of this formula looks like.
